Chicago Auditions

(courtesy of Chicago Tribune's Michael Tercha / June 22, 2009)

Idol is here! As I sit at my desk working, thousands are lined up to try and sing their way into my television screen come January...I can feel the excitement in the air! I don't personally know anyone auditioning today, do you?

I also haven't heard of any Ryan, Randy, Paula, Kara or Simon sightings in town....just Brandon Rogers from S6...stay tuned!

Music from Season 8

I was just sitting here realizing that at this point last year (and the 3 years before that), by mid-June, I had already created my personal American Idol compilation CDs from the season's live performances and lovingly labeled and shipped them to family members and friends, handed them out to moms on the playground and to neighbors....heck, even sent some to Internet Idol acquaintances!

It was magic. As soon as the finale was over, I would download the live performances from that final evening, personally select what were, to me, the season's most memorable performances, and create a season mix (remember the Mix Tape? A relic of the past....) I would try to include a number from each of that season's Top 10 just to be fair and keep things well-rounded (Lisa Tucker or Ramiele Mulabuy, anyone?). It was a task I anticipated with joy, and I took great pleasure in putting together and then sharing the CDs, and in reliving some of the season's best musical moments in the minivan throughout the summer and into the fall and winter....and beyond?!

So, why this post? Admission: I have yet to burn a Season 8 CD. I did download the performances but have been dragging my feet to create a 'best of" CD. The reason? While in years past, I have found it hard to limit the CD to the 80 minutes imposed by the hardware, I don't think I would have trouble this year doing that, and in fact, might have trouble even finding 80 minute's worth of decent music to put on the thing! I remember last year having to make song cuts that were tough...Archuleta's "Stand By Me" or Micheal John's "Light My Fire" when I had already selected "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right" for MJ's signature number, for example....this year? Meh. I've been listening to the downloads on my iPod and frankly, outside of 4 or so Kris Allen tracks, a few Allisons, a couple of Dannys, with one signature number each from Adam ("Mad World", the one without the screaming), Anoop, and and Lil' thrown in....that's all I can muster up.

I also feel hampered, as previously blogged, by the fact that we got less music this season. And that was primarily because of the 4 judge panel who needed to yak. We now know that all 4 judges will indeed be returning to Idol in the fall and that this problem will be addressed.

I am still undecided if I will press on with a CD from this year....so far, there has been no demand.... peeps?

Season 8 Wrap Up

People are still asking me what I think of Kris Allen as the winner of AI this season, so I guess it's not too late to put my final thoughts down, although it already feels like old news!

Like many, I was surprised that Kris won, given the hype that had surrounded Adam all season. I watched the finale feeling resolved to an Adam win, even though I didn't prefer his voice or vocal stylings, but also thought Kris would make a nice Idol representative. I think they are both winners. I am just glad that Adam has been gracious, humble and supportive of the whole franchise, and of Kris, and didn't go all Susan Boyle! They are both being signed and will enjoy all that a post-Idol career beginning offers. For a thorough analysis of how Kris won, please check out a great article written by my favorite Idol data geeks at What Not To Sing!

My other two favorites, Allison and Danny, have less than predictable futures. I was so impressed by Allison, love her voice, hope great things for her. Read an interview somewhere (can't find it!) with a producer who'd worked with previous Idols who said he would sign Allison because she's talented, and knows who she is as an artist....but I haven't read or heard anything official. She is young, but I think she has a fantastic career ahead of her.

I've caught some of Danny's post-Idol interviews and performance clips, and he's all over the place...and talking more about his dancing, his foundation, and what hair products he uses than about anything related to music, which is interesting and a little worrisome. The more I read of him, the more I do feel like this poor guy auditioned for Idol way before he was really ready (still grieving), and did not expect (nor was he at all emotionally prepared) to go as far as he did. The producers heard a great voice, packaged with an even bigger back story and latched on to him like flies to honey. He was propelled into and through the machine and came out the other end bewildered, that is how it feels to me. And while some talk has been that he should just go ahead and make a contemporary Christian record, this interesting article seems to suggest that Danny would not choose to go in that direction. Hmmm....will wait to see what happens with that! I will buy whatever he does, and think his Rascal Flatts-style stuff would be just great....

The rest of this season's Top 13 just weren't all that compelling for me....in fact, I've already forgotten half their names. And names I CAN recall from last year's more exciting contest are still trying to put stuff together....Micheal Johns and they uber-hyped Carly Smithson are still working on projects....Kristy Lee Cook managed a 7th place finish and was signed immediately, but her debut album has sold a meager 25,000 or so copies and she (and her horse) were then dropped from the record label. 5th place finisher Brooke White has released an album, but just in the last month, and on an independent label, hoping for the same success season 5's Elliot Yamin enjoyed. Jason Castro who placed 4th is still working on a project, and Syesha, last year's 3rd place finisher? Haven't heard Boo from her. Don't be fooled, these finalists have to work hard for their money, and then some.

On to other matters, namely, the changes implemented this season. The powers that be decided to have a Top 13 instead of a Top 12, implemented something called The Judges Save, and added a fourth judge. First of all, I don't think the Top 13 meant anything to anyone other than Anoop, and certainly kept him on the show longer than he would have been on, but it's an insignificant change. We all agree the Judge's save was a pile of poo, leaving us the one final change to discuss: the addition of Kara DioGuardi as 4th judge.

In my most recent (unscientific) poll, I asked whether Kara should return as a judge next season, and my results were split right down the middle at 50/50. I think this shows (unscientifically) how divided we are, as Idol viewers, on Kara. Many of you think she adds substance to the panel with her vast songwriting, performing and producing background, and adds balance to the panel bringing a 2 men, 2 women presence. But there are as many of you who find her to be useless, repetitive and boring. I find that fascinating! I see no evidence that she has been cut from the judge's panel for next year, so those of you how dislike her, brace yourselves, I think she will be baaaaack.....

I didn't mind her at all, other than the simple math fact that because of her, we got LESS MUSIC. This time last year I was making up my signature idol CDs from the season's live performances, and noticed that while last year I had 21 David Cook and David Archuleta performances to enjoy, this year I only had 15 from Kris and Adam. That is SIX fewer performances. Great for the Idols but not so great for those of us who enjoy music. Why so many fewer performances? Because of four judges, there was more talking and less music. We should have been treated to 3 performances each, for example, during Top 3 week, and instead got just 2 each. All in an effort to give the judges more time to talk and keep the show to it's predetermined 1 hour format.

On the other hand, for that reason alone, it might be a bad thing for me, but an OK think overall. Last year's finale had David Cook reading the winning song lyrics off a teleprompter, because he had faced so much music to learn to that point, and this year, I didn't see Kris (or Adam)reading the Boundaries lyrics off a prompter...did you? I could stand corrected, but I didn't see it. So perhaps (on the bright side) the four-judge mode brought the Idol contestants a little less pressure than they would have faced. Just a thought...

This time last year, I had purchased tour tickets and was on the edge of my seat for both David's CD releases. This year? Meh. No tour tickets for me.....just not that into any contestants, and it's really just so expensive to take the kids. And the CDs? I'm curious about what they will both put out, sometime around Thanksgiving, but I'm not committing to buying either one.

Happy summer! Watching So You Think You Can Dance....are you?

Guy Next Door is Season 8's Winner

Unbelievable....I couldn't have predicted it. Understated underdog and dark horse Kris Allen is your new American Idol. I could see the shock on Simon Cowell's face (or was that a smug grin because he underhandedly orchestrated it yet again in a classic case of reverse psychology....see how jaded I am?!).

Tonight's finale was very enjoyable, and I've got so many notes and am still amazed and giggling under my breath. I will try and keep this short.

Highlights for me:

  • Kris's duet with Keith Urban. How brilliant of a pairing! I didn't see that Kris could be a crossover country artist until this number....because it was just feel-good fun and good stuff. Totally enjoyable.
  • Allison's duet with Cyndy Lauper. Yes, this song is older than Allison herself (by 8 years!) and the lap harp was a little weird, especially the way it was positioned on Cyndy's lap, but did you notice how Allison kept vocal pace with Cyndy, and infused her own style into a song she probably barely knew....true artistry. LOVE Allison. Someone sign her!!
  • Kara in a bikini. I know this wasn't the highlight for some of you, and of course it was all totally scripted crap, but really...it was good finale TV! Love that she did it on a dare and the other judges will pony up for charity. And Bikini Girl has nothing on Kara in a bikini, Kara should not have been apologizing....she looked fab. Stop covering it up! It will disappear in no time....enjoy it while you can and quit apologizing!
  • Jason Mraz and the group number. Here's a guy nobody had heard of this time last year, and here he was on stage doing a fab song with the Top 13. Great song, great to see the top 13. Reminded me that Alexis was robbed of a top 10 spot!

  • David Cook's "Permanent". Bought this CD the day it came out last November, and promptly took a road trip with the fam. Knew hubby wouldn't listen to the entire CD, so selected my favorite 3 tracks. First was "Heroes", second was "Come Back to Me" and third was "Permanent." All that to say, I've always loved this song, and it was a true (unfortunate) privilege to hear David sing this for his brother.

Other giggle moments for me: I love Justin Guarini! Ryan wearing Nick Mitchell's red headband and greasy glasses. The major censor during the Black Eyed Peas (even rebels KISS didn't get that). Steve Martin on banjo (yes, you read that right). Bo Bice in the house! And finally, the boring adjudicator who entered the stage with the results, and my sad realization that any man with a British accent someone seems more handsome and like he has more authority.....**sigh**.

And I wouldn't call it a giggle moment, but after what I've read about Danny's Idol run this week following his ouster, I have a new found appreciation for the guy. In his exit interviews, he has basically admitted to being in over his head, that his Idol audition came too soon on the heels of his wife's death, that the Idol Powers That Be obviously saw a powerful back story and a guy who could sing, and thrust him forward through the machine....only he wasn't really ready, emotionally or spiritually. So for all of you who were feeling like Danny was exploiting his back story, it was Idol who was doing that because they saw dollar signs in him...just a thought....

Now, here's hoping that Kris Allen is more David Cook-ish than Taylor Hicks-ish in his post-Idol career...congrats Kris!!

Screamer Vs. Crooner in Idol Finale

Tonight really comes down to whether you like -- or do not like -- Adam Lambert, doesn't it? If you read this blog, you've caught on that I am not a fan. This is in no way a judgment of anything other than the way he sings, which is what this show is about. I don't like it, I am not alone in not liking it, and for this reason, I'm trying to vote for Kris as I write this blog (although happily all 3 lines of his are busy).

Overall, this wasn't one of my favorite Idol final performance nights, and for the most part, I am not emotionally attached to either contestant winning or losing. Either one can win and the world will go on (and so will American Idol). I'm exhausted from a season of manipulation, starting with Tatiana and and Norman Gentle; from constant judge pimping of Adam and Danny (despite mediocre performances, for the most part, and I'm a fan, people!); and from the whole she-bang just feeling bloated and irrelevant.

Tonight's performances were in 3 groups, 2 songs each. First group of songs were chosen by the contestants themselves as a favorite from the season; next were songs chosen not by Clive Davis of Sony Music Entertainment Worldwide fame but by Simon Fuller, Chief Executive of 19 Entertainment and creator of American Idol ; and the third song was that sappy ballad you've waited all season to hear, only this year (lucky us) it was co-written by our very own judge Kara (can't spell or pronounce her last name).

First songs up were no surprises, we've heard them both already this season. Adam's "Mad World" was Phantom of the Opera vs. Twilight according to Randy, and according to me it was what we'd already seen, with a little more attitude, since he'd read the blogs that people dug it the first time. He did have dry ice, though....and I'm buying the part about his being a hyperactive kid.

Kris does "Ain't No Sunshine," which was kind of a surprise since I would have loved to hear "Heartless" again, but kid is smart, he knows I just heard that last week. People are more familiar with this song even though it has only been done on Idol once before (Christina Christian in S2), so that may earn Kris points, and Simon's comment that Kris belongs in the finale won't hurt, either. And Kris has strings. Dry ice vs. strings? Tough call. Simon calls Round One to Kris. I don't know why they even do this.

Second set of songs are picks from Simon Fuller. Fuller picks "A Change is Gonna Come" from Sam Cooke for Adam. Considering this song came to exemplify the Civil Rights movement, I can't help but wonder what Fuller made of this choice. I of course found too much vibrato and screaming in Adam's performance, and thought the larger political message that Fuller may have wanted to use this song to convey was just too entirely cheesy (if in fact it was to highlight any analogies between the the race relations vs. sexual relations...if not, my humble apologies). Judges liked it (no surprise) and Paula even called Adam "iconic" which garnered a chuckle from me (inside joke).

Fuller's choice of the much more laid-back classic "What's Going On" for Kris fit my preferences more, but will that fit America's preference? I loved the bongos and the whole feel of this song, was tapping my toes like crazy and loving Kris and grooving on the purple light bath he was getting. Then Simon went all crazy on me to say that it was too laid back for a big show like tonight. Hmmm...maybe if Kris screamed it, Simon would have thought it was current and cool? And what about the comment about the choice for Kris being "socially conscious?" and Fuller's choice for Adam wasn't? Sheesh.

Here (or thereabouts) is where Randy pronounces that "we got ourselves a real live competition tonight" to make us think that it's still an open ball game. Round 2 goes to Adam (according to Simon).

Finally, the coronation song. Now, as a long-time watcher of Idol, I will admit that this is one of the more variable parts of the finale. There have been some years where I have just melted into a puddle of something for this song because it fit the winner perfectly (Kelly Clarkson's "Moment Like This", and Fantasia's "I Believe"), while there have been some years where I cringed (Reuben's "Flying without Wings" and of course Taylor Hicks "Do I Make You Proud?"). This year, they both sang the same song (something about mountains and hurricanes) and I honestly can't say I went either way, it was just there. Clearly, Kara and company have been writing this song for Adam even since they met him, but strangely, and perhaps unexpectedly, I think it favored Kris. Adam's version was totally "American Idol: The Musical"....oh, wait...maybe I'm watching Camp Rock on Disney Channel....oh, wait, snap -- I am on Fox after all! I am hating this song, and I'm not sure whether to blame it on Adam or Kara and her songwriting team yet, since Kris will do the same song.

Okay, it's Kara's fault. Kris's take more suits my taste, but it's still a crappy song. Nonetheless, I thought Kris's delivery was was smooth and sexy, and I could actually understand the lyrics being sung. I feel like Adam is there to create a mood, as a performer, through his clothing choice, lighting, vocal style....whereas Kris has a story to tell through his lyric. Either you are in the camp of the former, or the latter. Overall, I personally preferred Kris's version but think they both made the best of it.

Simon doesn't bother to call a winner for Round 3 because it's clear from all of the comments that Adam will win. Judges tell Adam he was exciting, original, a superstar. They tell Kris, good job, you surprised us, hope you had fun.

Meanwhile I'm still dialing all three of Kris's numbers and not getting through...

    And So it Gokeys....

As I wrote last night, it was a toss-up between Danny and Kris going into tonight, and too close to call, IMO. In a way, I'm not surprised Kris made it through, he's terrific, and his fans were motivated to get him to the finale (my sister said she voted 30 times for him, for example, and I doubt she's voted 30 times *total* all season!).

Job well done, Danny! I have been a fan from the beginning, and I know this is just the beginning for you. Love your voice, you make me smile, and I'll buy whatever you put out there on a CD.

If I put my Conspiracy Theory hat on, I might think this means that Kris was deemed less a threat to the preordained Adam victory, so Danny was sent packing.
When I take that hat off, I wonder if it could possibly be true that only 1 million votes (out of 80 million something cast) really could have separated the Top 2...if that is true, Kris stands a chance.

    On to next week!

Three Amigos Battle for Finale's Two Spots

According to most web polls, bloggers and Idol followers, Adam is a lock for next week's finale, and the only question is, will it be Kris or Danny who joins him? I saw spoilers about which songs the judges had chosen for each of them for tonight, but was totally mad curious about which songs they would each pick for themselves. Not to go all Kara, but the question of the day is, what kind of artist would each of these finalists be? I wanted to see this in their personal song choices tonight, and I'm not sure I did. The judges could feel the tension, obviously, as they were quite physical with each other all show long....sigh. They behaved like a bunch of 6th graders right before summer break! (can you tell where my mind is?)

The show opens.....Randy says DAWG and does his gang-ish hand gesture (check). Kara shows her armpit (check). Paula does her glamorous wave and looks giggly (check). Simon wears a grey or white t-shirt (check). We're ready to begin!

Danny goes first with Paula's pick for him, "Dance Little Sister" by Terence Trent D'Arby. I'm dating myself...remember the artist but not the song. Well, Danny d'Gokey did his thing and almost looks like Fantasia doing her rooster dance/strut. Randy said it was dope, Kara said the song was in Danny's "tonal money spot" but she thinks he gyrated too much, Paula thought he did really good and let the magic part of his vocal come out, and Simon thought the vocals were good but the dancing was "desperate." I didn't think it was magic, I thought it was shouty....and while I love the energy, I'm not loving Danny's opening.

His second song was much better, as he chose "You Are So Beautiful" and it was beautiful. There are a LOT of Danny haters out there, but I like his voice and enjoy his performances. Yes, this was his standard Church of Danny fare: slow, soft tender opening, followed by busting out loud, mad vocals, ending with tenderness. But it works, folks! Works for me, anyway! Randy pointed out that he really can sing (duh), Kara thought it was amazing, Paula felt like he infused his magic (wha?) and Simon pronounced it a "vocal masterclass." Wow. Paula is giving out lots of magic tonight.

Kris was in the sweet middle spot tonight, sweet guy that he is, with his parents (?) and wife in the audience. Clearly considered the underdog, Kris showed that he won't back down. Kara and Randy chose "Apologize" by One Republic, which he faithfully delivered, but then faced criticism from the judges who picked it for not changing the arrangement and making it his own, which Simon rightfully took great offense to. I was, frankly, bored with the song, fresh off David Archuleta's performance with One Republic themselves at last year's finale and wish they would have picked something else, even though I agree he was well-suited for it. Randy thought it was very nice, Kara called it confident but safe because he didn't make it his own, Paula pointed out his very prominent bum note but was still proud of him, and Simon as noted above pointed out the judge's cop out! I think they are both right ...Kris sang what the judges asked him to, but it would have been nice in this stage of the game to see Kris on acoustic guitar for this one.

And here is that guitar on Kris's personal choice of Kanye West's "Heartless", which was much more enjoyable. I am not familiar with the song, but Kris was able to pull me in and hold my attention, which I think Danny, in the same circumstances tonight, bordered on with his opening song. I think that Kris is in the pocket with this tonight, and it's just a matter of whether voters are, too. Randy thought it was better than the original, Kara called it perfect, Paula said it keeps him current, and Simon thinks despite Kris's first performance, this second one keeps him in the competition.

Adam goes last (big shock). When my copy of Entertainment Weekly came this week with Adam Lambert on the cover (the first time in the mag's history they have featured a just one contestant on the cover at this stage in the competition) I sighed. Despite Simon's admonitions at the close of tonight's show not to assume Adam will be safe, it's clear this guy is headed for the finale, and more than likely has the crown all wrapped up. I've made no secret on this blog that I'm not a fan (and been called out on that, thank you kind readers) but I'm sorry! I don't like his voice, I don't enjoy his performances.....so there. If you disagree, start your own flipping blog!

I LOVE U2 and was kind of sad when I found out Adam was doing the classic "One", and remembered Elliot (shout out!) in his performance with Mary J. Blige of this song in Season 5 (so did Simon really get two calls from Bono, or just a text the first time?). Didn't like this performance. I would call it, "U2: The Musical." All That Drama. It's actually a very tender and heartfelt lyric and Adam dragged, shouted and flounced it it all over the stage. I had to play the part twice where he actually sang "carry each other" with his tongue hanging out, almost like "Car-ytha-hter" or something like that. Didn't think that humanly possible. Randy said, yo, dude and didn't think it was in the zone, Kara called him a strategist (interesting word choice), Paula thought it was superb and pronounced she was looking at the next American Idol, and Simon thought it was brilliant. Hmmmph. Wonder what Bono thought? If anyone reads a reaction, send me to the link.

Adam closed the show with his personal pick, which is supposed to show me what kind of artist he would be post-Idol, and it's Aerosmith's "Cryin." I turned to my 9 year old son after the first few opening bars to ask, "Somebody else did this on Idol. Who was it?" to which he quickly replied, "Constantine." That's my boy! Raising him right....

I preferred Connie's version, actually. I just find it hard to believe that this theater guy would actually be a rocker. I just don't buy it. I also thought he was flat through lots of it, and screamy as usual. Randy said it was one of Adam's best performances "evah", Kara and Paula both said they would see Adam at the finale, and Simon said it was brilliant.
I think Danny has more fans to carry him to the finale, way more back story (and we know this is a significant factor due to this analysis) but that Kris is just as deserving as Danny to compete for the title. I think it's too close to call!

So, who do you think will be the final 2? Does sweet and modest Kris, the underdog, stand a chance against Danny the Back Story Giant? Will Adam wear nail polish to the finale? And most importantly, will you buy a CD that Adam puts out?

p.s. Thanks to a fellow Idol Blogger for the image this week! I hunted and hunted until I found hers. (Be sure to read her always-funny commentary!)

Rock Week Unpredictably Ends Rocker Allison's Idol Run

I can't say I saw that coming. And I'm feeling very sad, for Allison, for all that she could have brought to the finale, and to the title of American Idol Season 8. But honestly? I don't think she could have won up against Adam for sure, and not even Danny.....Kris, maybe, but even that is a stretch. We heard from the judges last summer and fall that Season 8 was a "guy's" season, so it makes sense that the remaining gal left the competition tonight. I thought her exit song was all kinds of awesome and I know something big will come of all of this for her.....cue Daughtry. As if we could find a better success story from a fellow Exit-at-Fourth-Place contestant!

While I do adore Allison and think she is wildly talented, I can sort of see how she didn't quite get the fan base that the guys have...for one example, take my mother....she has watched AI since Season 2, and loves the show, but just couldn't get past Allison's pink hair, and I think Mom might not be the only one in that frame of mind. I can also see how Allison was kind of uni dimensional (rock) and was seen as less versatile. Well, when she makes a record, it will be one style and not all over the place, but anyhow....just thinking out loud and trying to make sense of her departure. :(

So then we have Danny, who despite delivering one of what may become one of the Worst Ever Idol Performances last night with "Dream On" is headed home to Milwaukee Friday for a hero's welcome. If this paper's predictions are correct, we will see a Danny-Adam finale, although Kris can't be counted out.

I don't even know what else to say about the rest of tonight's show....I am still feeling embarrassed for Paula. I FF through most of Gwen's performance, happy that she gets that the Stay At Home Mom gig is harder than it looks, but hasn't she been on Idol like, 85 times? and she relevant here singing an ancient song, because.....And the aforementioned Daughtry continues to impress, even though I wasn't a fan while he was on the show, he has set the standard for what former Idol contestants can achieve without having to win.

On to next week, with the hometown parades, and finally two performances from each contestant. Will Clive Davis be choosing again? I don't know, but I will be watching......

    Rock Week Highlights Credible Rockers

Going in to this week's Idol, you knew this genre favored some folks (Adam and Allison) over others (Kris and Danny). So, the question was, were the latter two able to pull surprising performances out of their comfort zone and stay in the competition?

The evening started off with announcements of an "accident" on set which had turned Idol topsy-turvy and indeed, had injured Idol's stage manager, Debbie Williams, who fell from the top of a flight of stairs, dangled from a railing, and dropped to the floor. She was taken to the hospital with injuries. I'm not sure how this relates to the upside down Idol globe that Ryan pointed out at the top of the hour....did Debbie so tumble that it made the sign collapse? or was there a southern California earthquake that the Powers That Be are hiding? Recovery wishes to Debbie, whatever the case may be.

Moving on, the four remaining Idols took the stage for introductions for Rock Week, and it was clear from this screen shot that there are only two credible rockers: Adam and Allison. I love me some Danny and Kris, but let's face it: they are Vanilla in a sea of Rocky Road, baby, and that begs the question, can they hang??

(Note to Slash: I like and respect you, but tonight it would be great for you to take your glasses off when you are talking to me, or discussing the Idol performances. K?)

Adam was first up singing Led Zeppelin, a first for American Idol, and for that reason alone, I applaud it. However, Adam's "Whole Lotta Love" left me with a whole lotta eeewww....I've made no secret that I'm not a Fambert....and tonight wasn't a conversion experience. I understand that Randy thought it would make me forget that Adam is really a Broadway performer (it didn't); that Kara thinks he should put out a Glam Rock a a la Bowie record (I don't disagree but I won't buy it); that Paula thought it was a Whole Lotta Perfect (um, not); and Simon thought nobody would be that good the rest of the night (was that because in addition to his perfect judge's skills he has clairvoyant abilities? Or because he sits through the dress rehearsals and knows precisely what each contestant will sing, thereby having a couple of hours to prepare his very pointed remarks?)

Allison tackled Janice's "Cry Baby" in a very energetic performance following an appointment with Adam's hairdresser (remember he is from LA). Is this foreshadowing the finale? Randy doesn't love it, neither does Kara, Paula thought it was a great job, and Simon thought it was "confident and terrific" but with no originality. Which leaves that pretty much wide open. I thought, to do a Randy, that she was da bomb on this one....loved her...but no one is safe.

Kris and Danny do the First-Ever Idol duet and I would not have chosen Styx (didn't realize there were even harmonies on that song, and I'm not sure they even qualify as Rock) but they do the best they can, and in the very short end, Simon pronounces Danny's performance better than Kris's. Ouch.
Speaking of whom, Kris chose for his solo performance the Beatles "Come Together." I enjoyed this performance but agree with Simon that it didn't leave me with anything....love Kris on the guitar tho! Randy thought he was "being himself", but Kara though he "tried too hard." I'm not sure Paula liked it...she said something about it being risky, but that Kris is an artist who is "deserving" so I think that means she liked it.

Danny got the pimp solo performance spot (interesting) but I'm afraid his "Dream On" won't land him his dream which is to be the American Idol 2009. Yo, Randy gave him an A for effort but noted that it wasn't Danny's genre (duh), Kara thought Danny took his swagger "a little too far," (what?) and Paula didn't think it was the right song choice. Simon's comment about horror films was just harsh! But it was awful, and made worse only by the fact that Slash pointed out that if Danny was going to do it, he had to do it right.....ouch.

Final performance was from our two resident rockers on Foghat's "Slow Ride." High energy and both are having fun...if you guys chose the song, I'll work with you...but geez. I would not have chosen this song. I can't honestly offer up a suggestion, though! Randy thought, yo, it was da bomb, Kara pronounced them Rock God and Goddess, and Paula said it was a "perfect marriage" (do they know Adam and Allison aren't on the same team??). Simon thinks this last performance will keep Allison in the competition another week.

Which means, bottom line: I love all four of these guys. If I HAVE to choose, the bottom 2 would probably be Kris and Danny, with Kris leaving tonight, although it depends how many fans of each come out in force....that is the wildcard (along with Allison's fans....)

Go buy Elliot's sophomore CD released today!

Bottom line? Adam safe. The others? I think they are all vulnerable! I think it is anyone of the other three to lose......

    Elimination Drama in the Idoldome

C'mon, just about every single website/person/blogger such as myself predicted Matt's demise tonight, so the bottom line is that his elimination was not a surprise. What was a surprise to many, however, was that the Almightly Adam joined Matt in tonight's bottom three. And that Kris was alongside these two, when it was widely felt that either Danny or Allison would be there.....hhhmmm.....this means Danny remains as the only Season 8 contestant to escape the Bottom 3 so far in the competition.

Can I just say, Danny and Allison both seemed genuinely shocked to learn they were safe (well, Allison did). I liked how the judges were asked to comment on the B3 and Simon remembered to say, let's give props to the two who are through. Nice. I love these two and am looking forward to hearing them next week! I also hate that cruel, choose-the-group-to-join trick they do at this point in the competition, and used on Adam tonight, only made worse by the fact that he chose the wrong group. OUCH.
Now, Kris's appearance in the B3 was a bit of a surprise, only because Allison has been there before and Kris had not, and because Kris has been gaining momentum and recognition in the recent weeks while Allison hasn't entirely earned the love from the judges. So, why did Kris appear to slip? I was talking with folks at work, and there are many who find him too safe, too plain....and too goody-two-shoes, apparently (myself? I go for that! :) To many American Idol voters, it's like going to Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors and ordering vanilla. I think Kris is very, very talented and I enjoy his performances, and don't think tonight means he's out of the running for the S8 crown, but he's been served notice for sure.

Of course, the big surprise was Glambert's appearance in the bottom, even over Hokey Gokey and Allison. Wow. Even he seemed shocked although he contained it well. For those who have no idea how this could happen, I refer you to a recent column by Brian Mansfield, who now writes the "Idol Chatter" column for USA Today. He asked his viewers this week, "What puts you off about the American Idols?"
More than one hundred comments poured in about each of the five remaining contestants and of course, there was bad Karma for everyone, but I give you here some of what was said about Adam Lambert … "has a habit of loudly screaming a series of notes in every performance” … “he is best suited for a stage-style performance” … "He also PLAYS to the audience in a manner that kinda' makes my skin crawl" ... "fakey, fakey emotion" ... "definitely a manipulator" ... "over the top" ... "can't sing a song through without screeching/screaming" ... "like fingernails on a chalkboard” … “Adam's lower register. Oh wait. He doesn't have one” … “I hate the way he thrusts his tongue when he hits a high note. I just do.” Read all the critique here.
This is just to demonstrate that his appearance at the bottom tonight was not a shock for Idolmama because I agree with all of the above comments, and was gratified to learn that others share them. I also assert that Adam's B3 status was exploited to it's full dramatic potential by American Idol. Remember, they did identify the Bottom Three, but when they sent Kris to safety, they did not say he had the third-lowest number of votes...meaning that they were likely just manipulating viewers and increasing the drama factor to put Adam against Matt. Result? Predicable (still) elimination for Matt and likely speed-dialing for Adam's fans once they recover from shock. In other words, they took a predictable outcome and used whatever they had to create drama. Shameless.
Other thoughts: performances from Natalie Cole and Jamie Foxx. Filler. Wish Natalie the best on her Korean tour. I fast-forwarded through Foxx's performance, although I did enjoy his very supportive and thoroughly neutral comments about the Idols afterward. I think he is trying to redeem himself over his Miley tirade and moderate a bit. I appreciate it.
On to Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks. He looked great, but my family was asking ourselves, how did he win? And my daughter asked, trying to remember, who was he up against that year? (Elliot, ouch). But Simon summed it up perfectly when he offered advice to the remaining four when he told them "not to forget the fans who picked up the phone." THIS is precisely why Taylor Hicks was singing in front of you tonight. He had a huge fan base while on the show, so huge it propelled him to victory over other worthy contestants, and is carrying a somewhat successful post-Idol career. You saw it tonight, he very graciously thanked the fans and gave them props, which is endearing. This is the secret to his success. (Plus, he has more charisma than Elliot had on the show, even though Elliot is way more talented than him....debate and discuss if you feel the need....)
So, what did you think of tonight's elimination? (not necessarily the result, but the means, but I welcome all comments!) Do you think the saturated post-Idol field of also-rans can support a career for Matt Giraud, or will he head back to the piano bar at K-Zoo? And why was Kara dressed so matronly while Paula let the girls out?

Idols Bring Swagger to Rat Pack Classics

I loved tonight's show. Not only was there just great music, but the kids were cool, horns were blazing, everyone looked dapper borrowing from Ryan's closet, and the muck from the judge's pit was kept to a dull roar.

It's true, they are all very, very good. No dull knife in this drawer. I hope they all have continued music careers after Idol! Best of luck to each of them. At this point, it isn't about the performance tonight, it's about previous fan bases...no?

I was, however, looking forward to hearing two songs each from the remaining 5 contestants, as they typically do at this point in the competition. However, it seems that because the shows have been running over time, even with 7 and 8 performances in one hour, the powers that be knew they couldn't do 10 performances in a one-hour show with comments from all 4 judges for each song....so....they each performed one, and we had lots of comments, and footage of each contestant with tonight's "surprise" (read: last-minute) mentor, Jamie Foxx.

    Huh?

Okay, I thought this was a family show, but my kids were like, isn't that the guy who dissed Miley? Wasn't sure about what he would bring to the show at ALL, but in the end, really liked the guy and found him to be an endearing mentor.

I am tired and it's late, so I'm going to do a stream-of-conscience thought-dump post of tonight's show, in the order of performance, with some concluding thoughts. Kay?

Kris is beautiful. No, really. He's a beautiful person and a GREAT singer, and I think he might make the finale. (I'm struggling over whether or not I actually want him to, because only two can get there and I have other favorites.) Jamie said Kris was his "number one" and I wasn't sure that was because he actually went first, or because he was actually Jamie's fav. He did say he wants to hook up with him if the Idol thing doesn't work out, which I think he was serious about. Kris sings "The Way You Look Tonight" in a soft and sultry way, and the Crush Train just rolled into town....yowza! I was on it. I get with Randy, Kara and Paula that it was fantastic, but what in all things Idol did Simon mean that it was "wet"? I'm with Ryan, Simon should 'slpain....and then Ryan telling Kris to "go dry off" was classic. I heart Kris and think he's a star.

Allison came out dressed like Brittany Murphy but sounding like Pink (according to Randy) but according to me she was just great. Like Paula, I was really hoping for something softer from her, something that would showcase her vocals and let America see what a gem she is...tonight was something like that, a beautiful song but not as much tenderness as I would have preferred. While great, I still think she pushed it vocally a little more than I wanted. Kara thinks she is headed for the finals (does Danny know?) but Simon thinks her lack of confidence is apparent (does anyone sporting pink hair lack confidence?). I'm hoping Simon said that so that people speed dial her tonight! I want her to stay!

It's Matt's favorite week (jazz) and he's glad he's here for it, even though he got a "B" in jazz in college, LOL. He does "My Funny Valentine", which I must say is a personal favorite of mine, owing to the fact that I still listen to Constantine's version from Season 4 (and not Mindy Doo's show-stopping version from S6, what can I say?!). I hear something from Jamie about changing keys and holding notes, and I'm not sure Matt did that until Paula comments that she liked that Matt took Jamie's advice. I honestly don't find his vocals to be as good as Kris's or Allison's tonight, I don't like the hat, and agree with Kara that I'm just not connecting with him. I don't know if you saw this, but in the opening sequence of the show tonight with Ryan, Matt looked terrified. At the end of the day, though, Simon pronounced it "brilliant" which is akin to getting an A+ on your jazz final.

Danny, Danny, Danny. I just know that no matter what happens the rest of the season on Idol, I will hear your sweet voice again. I know that it might not happen next week, nor in the show's finale on May 19th, but you are someone who will make music after this show is finished no matter the outcome, and I will purchase it. Danny, with fresh breath, took on the classic "Come Rain or Come Shine" and while it started slow, I was "high as a mount-tayne and deep as a reaver!" by the time he was done. The Church of Danny was in the House and he blew the rafters off as I expected. I actually had to rewind and watch this one twice. Randy decided that Danny can sing (just now?) , Kara dug his swagger, and Paula called it stellar...and then Simon hit a comment home-run with "outstanding"....just what Danny needed this week. I liked how Simon gave props to Jamie for helping to bring out whatever it was in Danny by getting up in his grill....it worked!

No surprise, the Chosen One closes the show. White Suit, Pink Stairs, Pimp Spot...need I say more? Adam sings like he's already won, and Simon would call that confidence. I want Simon to call it indulgent, but he doesn't. I agree with Randy that it's too Broadway, too theatrical, too drama....enough said. I also don't like it when singers sing with their tongue hanging out, but apparently Adam has a lot of fans doing this, so who am I? Kara calls it sleazy, and I finally feel understood.

I am resigned to Adam being in the finale, but up against who? This is the million-dollar question. It could be any one of the remaining. Well, except Matt. I think Allison is the long shot to the finale, and Kris and Danny are even-steven. Both are terrific. I can't speculate!

I hope Matt is the one to go tomorrow, and I hope its not Allison, although I fully expect that it could be.

Holy Mother of All Things Disco!

Okay, I'm still shaking from tonight's show. And not in a disco way. I really, really don't know what to make of all that.

It didn't start out good for me when I was still waiting to start my DVR when a good friend text (texted?) me to notify me that, in his opinion, the results shows had hit a new low tonight. I started my tape with much trepidation, and admittedly, low expectations.
Imagine my surprise when, I actually LIKED the group number! Didn't like the lip syncing, but considering all the hawt Paula Abdul dance moves they had to complete, I guess I'll let that slide. (I can understand since I'm one of those either-walk-or-chew-gum-but-not-both types.) I thought the dance was cute, everyone looked like they were having fun, and I enjoyed it more than I expected. I especially liked the part near the end when they each took off down the "runway" to strut their personal stuff. Memories of every frat party, high school reunion and wedding I've ever attended came flooding back....but in a good and thoroughly cheesy way.
Unfortunately, from there, it all kinda ran downhill. And I'm not talking about the "shocking" (NOT) eliminations of Lil' Rounds and Anoop. I'm talking about those Diva Disco Dinosaurs they dragged out of the crypt to perform. Part of me was like, hey! These ladies did their thang in the day, let's honor and show respect....they did sing live, after all, something our own Idol contestants didn't do, and I gotta hand it to them for coming out and giving it their all.
Problem One was that, they just about gave it their ALL and then some! First off all, the outfits....man. A few sizes too small. I found myself discussing the laws of physics with my 9 year old son while watching this family-friendly (?) show. And then I found myself wondering out loud about the entire disco genre in general....where it came from, why it was popular, until the man formerly known as Harry Wayne Casey came out and sang "Get Down Tonight" with a slew of women from IDon'tKnowWhere, then I just scratched my head in disbelief. How on Earth did it come to this on the Idol stage? Further, how did this man ever become as popular as he was?! He has no musicality, and that is not just because he shops in the Men's Plus Department now....I just couldn't see it. Wow. Maybe Paula should have taught him some dance moves!
Cute and smiley David Archuleta was out of breath and winded for his performance of admittedly my least favorite track on his debut CD, "Touch My Hand" but it was still nice to see him, and I thought the feedback/advice he gave Allison and Anoop as they awaited their fate was honest and heartfelt...I wish him the best on his upcoming UK tour and summer whirlwind with Disney cutie Demi Lovato.
Anoop and Lil were both gracious exits, thank goodness. I do think they are both very talented, and even though times are tough out there (ask anyone,we're all working hard for the money, particularly Idol also-rans) I do think there is a place for Lil on stage somewhere!
So, we're down to FIVE! I'm putting Matt and Danny on notice this week, even though Allison was the one in the B3 this week. I think she is more talented than both of them. Also, interestingly, since Lil was eliminated, there is no one of color in the top five for the first time in the show’s history. And if Allison had been eliminated intead of Anoop, it would have been the first season without a woman in the final five, too.
What do you think? Did you enjoy the disco divas and KC? Did you shield the eyes of any minors in your house while watching tonight? And do you think Anoop's parents are relieved to go home to NC? I do! Hollywood ain't NC....

Dim All the Lights: It's Disco Week!

Three observations to open this blog: first off, I agree with Randy that this is the most talented Top 7 ever. I mean, they are all good...there are no Sanjaya's, no Jasmine Trias's....in other words, no obvious misfits who rode into the finals on something other than true talent. I also think everyone looked great tonight! Hair, clothes, make- up.....everyone pulled it together. I also have to say, this was the most un-disco week ever for a disco week! Allison rocked it, while Adam, Kris and Anoop slowed it down. We got to hear from all 4 judges! And suffered very little filler.

That said, the Top 3 and Bottom 3 were fairly obvious. Kris and Adam are leagues ahead of everyone else in musicality, vocals and performance, and Allison remains a fave.

I really, really, really liked Kris's performance of "She Works Hard For The Money" and it was the best of the night for me. The bongos and the groovy vibe, right down to his crooked little smile and the song choice from the "women's department" really worked for Kris and endeared him to me just a little bit more. This was one of season 6 winner Jordin Spark's worst songs, and thank goodness Kris made me forget that dismal performance. I agree, Kris is ready for the big time!

My second fave was Allison. While Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff" has never been done on American Idol before, Allison laid down the performance to which all others going forward will be compared to, should they even attempt it. Agree that watching a 16-year-old strut in the highest of heels and talk about her stuff was a little weird, but her powerhouse vocals more than made up for it. She instantly gave this disco classic her signature rock edge that totally worked for her, and since Simon called it "brilliant", she is assured her place in the competition next week.

And already headed to the finals according to Paula (and the rest of the world, according to the press) is Adam, who looked fantastic tonight for sure (despite his ring purchased, certainly, from Paula's jewelry line on HSN). I love anything from the iconic Saturday Night Fever, and while I know everyone else loves Adam, once again I didn't connect with his whiny, falsetto, screechy performance of "If I Can't Have You." So sue me!

Poor Lil and Anoop will most certainly be in the bottom tomorrow night. Lil's Idol run is likely over, but she should be proud of it. Not to sound like Paula, but despite her wild vocals, she truly did look fabulous tonight, her best ever, but her vocals as Randy pointed out were all over the place, and let's face it: karaoke, despite her arguing the contrary. This song ("I'm Every Woman") has been done three other times on Idol by three very talented and powerful women (Trenyce in Season 2, Vonzell in season 4, and most recently Mandisa hit a home run with this song in Season 5) but sadly, Lil's version doesn't match up to any of those.

And Anoop got the pimp spot, but I'm not sure why because his vocals just weren't there. And it wasn't just those repetitive lyrics in "Dim All the Lights" that didn't showcase what he can do, or the fact that he messed the lyrics up....and I actually loved the outfit and the new facial hair....but I had to agree with Simon that it was mediocre and nothing to write home about. I'm afraid he just doesn't have the fans to pull him through yet another trip to the bottom 3.

Matt was awarded the next-best performance slot at number 6 of 7, but it didn't seem to do him any favors. Again, he picked the totally wrong song, "Stayin' Alive" and gave it nothing original. Next to Kris and Adam it sounded horribly wedding and karaoke, and I agree with Simon that it felt desperate, although it's totally understandable why that might be the case! The judges threw him what love they could, as they have all season, but again, I don't think America will.

Squarely in the middle, neutral ground, the Switzerland of Idol, is Danny. Across the web, Danny gets more love than hate (although I am shocked at the Danny Hate that is out there.) Which is where the blogsphere finds him: Idol Chatter at USA Today ranked him 3rd after tonight's performance, he's ranked #4 by Entertainment Weekly going into tonight, and MJ's readers poll has him at #4, too, just to name a few examples. So, what does that mean for him? I always love me some Danny and tonight didn't disappoint me, but didn't thrill, either. I love Earth, Wind and Fire and really enjoyed his energy and vocals, but "September"? His smile is contagious, and loved that his sisters were in the audience! But I worry about Simon declaring that he has no star power. He could be a surprise B3 member tomorrow night, but hopefully not for a couple more weeks.

The Final 4 seem to be shaking out as Danny, Adam, Kris and Allison, with any one of those three going head to head with Adam in the finale. Course, THIS is American Idol and we know nothing is set in stone! From the Top 5 down to the Top 2 we've seen much drama (see Gray, Tamyra; Daughtry, Chris; Yamin, Elliot; and Doolittle, Melinda for examples).

Did you agree that Paula actually looked beautiful and was coherent for the show? Do you think Danny is vulnerable this week? And what do you make of the dramatic Wall of Fire that Ryan opened the show in front of?! "NO one will be SAFE." LOL! Leave your thoughts here!

    Judges Play the Save Card

I was honestly thinking they meant Lil was worth saving when Simon said "one of them" was "worth it"....but in the end, they played the much-hyped save card to keep Matt in the competition another week. I honestly think this just gives him one more week to sing and nothing more, but whatevs. First off, he was a wildcard pick....meaning, he wasn't a first draft pick of the judges to begin with, and has struggled ever since. Secondly, this is his second trip to the bottom three. Voters haven't embraced him en masse, and why should we suddenly begin to now? Third, his vocals weren't great this week. And they were even worse tonight. What this means is that another, more deserving contestant will go home with Matt next week, which is a shame. Clearly an emotional moment for him tonight and I feel for the guy, but I'm afraid DISCO will do him no favors. And how does Lil feel tonight knowing they would not have saved her? HHmm....not good, I would guess, especially after all the love and pimping, but disco will be easier for her.

Other random thoughts: Loved J-Hud. Beautiful and triumphant return to the Idol stage, like no other former contestant, on so many levels. I must admit I wasn't a lover while she was on the show....felt she was too over-the-top and while she certainly had a fantastic voice, it wasn't meant for Idol. She has shown us where it most certainly is meant for, with her Grammy and Oscar....you go, girl!

To the contrary, I found myself scratching my head at Miss Cyrus. Since I have kids and a 'tweener in the house, I have seen Miss Cyrus's TV show and it is cleverly written and smart. But I found her performance trying to be too grown-up, and didn't think she can really sing all that great. Her head-banging and hair flopping came across as an attempt to be taken seriously or something....but the vocals weren't there to back it up.

Zac Efron in the house -- much cuter on the red carpet, all cleaned up. I know grunge is in, but e-GADS....did he leave the house without showering, or was all that greasy hair tucked into that awful hat done on purpose?! Hubby thinks he spent hours perfecting that look...that scares me.

What do you think? What were Paula and Simon whispering about all evening? Do you think the save should have been saved for Danny or Anoop? and are you dreading or looking forward to disco week?

At the Movies with the Top 7

Lots riding on tonight. This was a make-or-break week for Lil, Matt and Anoop for sure, and since they all can't go home, someone had to tank. Who was it?

Meanwhile, can you believe that they adjusted the format of the show to include comments from only 2 of the 4 judges after each performance, in an effort to save time and avoid going over as they have in weeks past, only to have to cut them all off at the end to once again avoid going over time at the end??!! ARGH!!

I was intrigued by the addition of Quentin Tarantino as mentor, and hadn't remembered his stint as guest judge in Season 3 (had you?). I believe he is a talented movie producer, but wondered what he could possibly bring to the Idol stage other than name recognition and a few giggles. By the end of the show, I gave props: dude knows what he is talking about. The feedback he gave to the contestants was real, it worked and I was impressed (and that ain't easy to do). The idols chose slow songs for the most part, although Adam was the exception with tonight's only uptempo selection.
So, how did movie night shake out? Pretty well, considering we didn't have any Disney entries, and nobody completely fell apart and blew it. That said, the evening provided some pretty clear categories to discuss. I'll divide them using standard fare from the judge's table:
Mad Love: As in, million percent yes, unanimous fantastic, you're the one to beat, etc. Actually, I didn't think any contestant got mad love from the judges tonight.
Props: Meaning, good job, I liked it. Allison and Anoop got props tonight. First off, Allison is a star, have I said that enough? Her performance of Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" was terrific. I tried not to compare it to David Cook's, but it was easier given that they are opposite genders and totally different performers. I can't understand why the judges haven't been pimping her from the beginning. Too edgy and rocker? (true, they haven't historically done well on Idol). Too young? (well, David Archuleta and Jordin Sparks were both 16 and 17 years old). Too pink-haired? (they haven't, historically, done well either....see McKibbon, Nikki; Olivarez, Vanessa; Adams, Amy; Sierra, Jessica; and Glocksen, Gina). I think her voice is fantastic and really feel like she is just the thing Idol needs for a winner... now 19 Entertainment and American voters need to be convinced of the same thing.
Anoop delivered a beautiful "Everything I Do, I Do For You" and the judges (Randy and Kara in this case) thought it was great, and Kara even pronounced it one of his best. I can't disagree, although I found myself wondering if I could really see him as the American Idol this season, and I have to admit, I couldn't.
Keeping It Real: This is where the judges say, I liked it, BUT....and then there is some kind of hesitancy in the critique. I would have to say that Matt and Danny fell into this category tonight. First off, Matt has been struggling and has been inconsistent in past weeks. He chose "To Love A Woman", a beautiful song also done by Bryan Adams (who has to feel good this week that two of the seven songs performed were his). I'll admit, I've not been a fan of Matt's (although don't deny his talent and would have loved to be a fly on the wall of his piano bar in K-Zoo Michigan before this all started!). I tried, tonight, to see and hear him with fresh eyes and ears, to try and connect with what millions of others apparently have....and tonight, I caught a glimpse of Matt and what makes him special. Beautiful song, great delivery....yes, vocals weren't spot on the entire time but I connected with him I think for the first time.
Meanwhile, Randy found it pitchy and rough, and thought he had "too much stuff going on" (meaning vocal rifts and stuff)....and Kara said he struggled between rock and soul. Hhmmph. We'll see what America thinks.
Danny, too, had his issues tonight. First off, where were the glasses? Did he get Lasik and not tell us? I also wondered, again, why he didn't heed mentor's advice: Quentin said, put your hands in your pockets, and yet Danny still did his whole wave and point thing while singing....
I find "Endless Love" to be a very boring song and I thought Danny's delivery started slow but delivered a big finish. I can totally get where Simon would be disappointed given David Cook's amazing take on Lionel Richie's "Hello" last season, but come on...that is a high bar to reach! I love, once again, how Danny stays true to himself and his beliefs with his song choices that come across honest and real without being preachy or patronizing.
Split decision: Three singers had split results tonight, and I think that says a lot. Adam, Kris and Lil got mixed reviews. I think that means nobody completely flopped...which is true....but the new judge's format and shortened comments made it tough for the judges to really let loose.
Adam's choice of "Born to be Wild" was kind of a surprise for me. There were SO many songs being tossed around the Internet for him this week (not that he would see them) but this was not one of them. Personally, I get his vocal chops but I am not a fan. Too theater, too performance, too high-pitched and falsetto for me. I know this is not a popular opinion! Deal with it! He got the fancy light show and some of Paula's choicest commentary this season about daring to "be in the path of greatness and bravery" and such, but Simon was right on with his Rocky Horror connection.
Meanwhile, Kris couldn't have been further from Rocky Horror....he chose a song from the lesser-known but beautiful movie "Once" and performed the song "Falling Slowly" which received a 2008 Academy Award for Best Original Song. As Kara said, it was an obscure song, but it also turned out to be one of his best, and I agree. Randy thought it was pitchy and didn't catch the groove. I thought it was spectacular and love Kris tonight more than yesterday.
Lil had the pimp spot tonight, and I think that is because the Powers That Be sense her vulnerability and know that she is struggling, but still want her in the finals...so what better way to support her, but pimp her! She looked beautiful, although I can tell you as a mere mortal viewer that Lil looks completely different. How can I connect with a contestant who looks so different than she did just a few weeks ago when I fell in love with her? All of a sudden, I don't see that Memphis mom who has 3 kids and lost her home, I see a glamour -girl with all kinds of eye make up and hair extensions that totally change her look.....just saying. I don't fault her at all, if I were in her shoes, I would probably do the same, but I think we've lost Lil in all that.
"The Rose" is a beautiful song, and her vocals were adequate, but I did not see a star.
What did you think of tonight's movie performances? Did you see Katie Couric in the house? Did you like the band being back on stage (I did). And most importantly, who do you think will end up in the finals with Adam?

Idols Do Wheelhouse of 80's Tunes

I've never understood the "year they were born" song theme....you don't know music while you are in diapers!

Once again, my fav performances from tonight don't necessarily match the judge's critique. Allison and Anoop were the highlights for me, while the judges loved Adam and Matt more than I did. Danny went first and while it wasn't my favorite (I think I'm burned out on that song, even changed up), it was solid. Meanwhile, Kris faltered, and Lil and Scott may stumble into the bottom three.

Danny kicked off the evening with "Stand By Me", a song done on American Idol most recently last season (brilliantly, I might add) by David Archuleta, but also even better by Bo Bice in the final 5 show of Season 4. Danny's won't match up to these two stellar performances, but it was good enough to keep him around. As this season's oldest contestant (LOL), Kara said he "killed" it, and Paula predicted the others would be trying to catch up to him.

Then again, Allison also chose a song with some pretty strong Idol history ("I Can't Make You Love Me"), with memorable performances from Constantine Maroulis in S4 and Kimberly Locke in S2, but her performance made me forget I'd ever even heard the others sing it. I echoed Kara's amazement that a 16-year-old could deliver that kind of heartfelt lyric at such a young age, and Paula's suggestion that we just go and make the record already. I love, love, Love Allison and agree she is a Kelly Clarkson in the making! But would the judges use the save on her if needed? Simon wants more "personality" from her.....the collective agreement in the room I watched was that we love Allison, but we just don't know what kind of artist she would be, what kind of genre she fits into, and this could hurt her.

Probably most at risk this evening of losing fans before the performance was Anoop, but happily he pulled us all back on board in just the first few opening notes, slaying Cyndy Lauper's "True Colors" from 1986. Excellent song choice!! I think these kinds of theme nights go best when contestants choose songs performed by the opposite gender, have you thought that? Judges ll thought he was good, but I thought it was great. Beautiful. Million percent YES.

On the other hand, I didn't agree with the judge's assessment of Adam and Matt. (And my Tivo didn't cut off Adam's performance, although they did say they were running so short that only Simon got to offer feedback, but I guess that had something to do with my viewing the show this evening from the Eastern Time Zone.) I knew Adam would probably bring something special to the evening, given that he was last on the docket, but I didn't think what he did was great, and I know I'm in the minority here. I like that he chose a lessor-known song ("It's a Mad World") from the awesome Tears for Fears but I just didn't think it warranted the showy standing ovation from Simon. I know lots of you think Adam has this thing wrapped up, but I have a conspiracy theory I'll put out there one day soon...
I also though Matt's performance of "Part Time Lover" from the mosh pit was pretty cheesy and awful, and that fedora didn't help (although it did hide the mole). The judges must have heard it differently, with "unbelievable" coming from Kara's lips, and Paula standing up. Hhhmmph. Again, still not loving Matt for some reason.

I think we agree on who will probably be in the bottom this week, starting with who-I-hope-isn't: Kris. coming off last week's brilliance makes it more difficult to write that his performance this week was a mess. I still think he belongs in music and not behind the wheel of a cab, but seriously, "All She Wants to Do Is Dance"? I love me some Don Henley like the rest of 'em, but this isn't a singer's song, and the mosh pit made it extra cheesy. Agree with judges that the band/horns overpowered the song and that Kris was lost in it, but thought Simon was extra harsh....I hate the word stupid used in any context! And he said it twice! Along with his mot du jour this season, indulgent.
And I think we've seen the best of Lil. She has a beautiful big box voice that can sing anything, but you have to be able to do more than just sing on this show to take the prize...and Lil just doesn't have any star power, any artistry. Choosing a Tina Turner song just really underscored this point. I will say that I have searched my Idol database (in my head, since I don't know of another) to try and recall any previous contestants who were also mothers of three, and I can't think of any....so props to Lil for that alone, and she is still a winner and a lovely lady.
Cutest baby photo goes to Scott (above) but "The Search Is Over" for who should go home tonight. We've seen all that he can do in this competition, and that ghastly Survivor song did him no favors. And that playing with trains comment? Chicks dig that! No wonder he's still single :) I also wondered if Scott knew that just strapping the guitar on wasn't enough, that he actually had to play the thing. Harsh, I know but I'm so over Scotty!
What did you think? Do you agree that Anoop is back in the game, and that Scott should go home? Did your TiVo cut off before Adam performed? And how sick are you that they can't get the timing right for this show and have to rush (or even skip!) essential elements, like hearing from all 4 judges?? ARGH.

    And Then There Were Eight...

It wasn't a surprise that Megan "Kristy Lee" Joy finally flew the coop tonight but they sure drug out the suspense, no? That old "three groups of three" trick....making us think that one of the groups of 3 was the bottom three....ha. Those stinkers at Idol, always one step ahead. LOL

Admission: skipped the Ford "video". Was it good? Also FF through the group number. No offense to Journey, but I have to draw the line.

I must take serious offense at Allison in the B3. There is no way this should have happened, and I can only reason that Allison's appearance on the Silver Stool is an attempt to bolster her votes to keep her on the show. Allison is one of the top 3 talents this year, for sure.

Admission: I love David Cook. I know he looked really tired, and his eyes were so droopy it looked like he was going to fall asleep at any minute while singing, but then I spotted his Mom in the audience singing along, and it was all worthwhile. And by the time the song was finished, I was in full Cook Mode. Yeah, baby.

(Jason Castro in the house! Sitting next to and chatting with Alexis Grace! Cool....Idol seasonal cross-pollination!)

I also should add that I have concluded that Kris Allen is the most talented contestant on Idol this season. He may not have the "currency" of Adam, or the stage presence and charisma of Danny, but he is more talented musically than either of them. Can he overcome the extreme pimping of other contestants....and use his talents to make us forget the fact that he is married -- GASP-- and make it all the way to the finale? I shudder at a Kris vs. Adam finale, since it would be a head-to-head like no other....but I can see how the producers would love this match-up and would start planning for it now.

Okay, back to tonight's show. Anoop seemed to sense that it was his night and graciously accepted it...but he gets another week at the mansion and a chance to sing a song for us from the Year He Was Born (which is sometime around 1988, I'm guessing, meaning I'm WAY older than him and could probably make a few song suggestions!). Meanwhile, lovely Megan had a GREAT time dancing all over that Idol stage on her way out, watching her video montage (which was really, really well done, kudos to the video peeps!) and will soon be holding her precious boy and at the same time planning child care for the boy during the long summer tour. Okay, I'm a mom! Worry about these things.....
    Job well done, Megan!
On to next week....any suggestions for songs? Would love to hear them!

Top Performances from Three on Top Downloads Week

I thought tonight's was a great show! Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect from this week's quite ambiguous theme of "most popular downloads" (mysteriously undefined) but understood that it was a chance for the contestants to have free reign (more so that any other theme week) to choose from a wide range of songs and showcase themselves. Tall order to fill.

(I wondered how/why they had come up with this "theme" until the idols stopped by one of Uncle Ryan's other places of employment, AKA the studios of "American Top 40", the radio program made famous by Casey Kasem and hosted by Seacrest since 2004. That cross-plug makes sense!)
In sum, three of the contestants had shining "Your Best Performance So Far" nights from the judges, three of them seemed to make good song choices and delivered good performances but had other issues, and three of them fell flat, making them vulnerable for tomorrow night's Bottom Three.
    (David Spade in the house!)
According to the judges, best performances so far this season were delivered tonight by Danny, Scott and Kris. Danny stayed true to himself with his choice of a Rascal Flatts song (fellow Christian country-ish artists) with the heartfelt "What Hurts the Most". I happen to be a Rascal Flatts fan and love this song, and love Danny, making me really enjoy this performance, although I disagree that it was his best so far. He did get the "stool spot" with Ryan pre-performance and talked afterward as well. Gosh, I know many of you don't, but I like him!!
Scott, on the other hand, got heaps of praise for his (boring) rendition of Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are".....gosh, I hit the snooze button three times and when I woke up each time, he was STILL singing. It may very well have been his best vocal, but that ain't saying much.....guy's got to go. This guy has no star power at all and may as well be singing in a hotel lobby for me.
Kris, on the other hand, is a star in the making. I've had my eye on him since this thing began, and wow, they finally took him out of the middle and pimped him and it paid off. Loved, loved, loved his performance of "Ain't No Sunshine"....I think he was (is) better than Danny (eeeekk, did I just say that out loud?) and hope we get more of him!!!
Allison, Lil' and Adam were in the middle of the pack tonight. Good song choices and good performances, but each had "issues" and didn't deliver their personal bests tonight. First off, Allison's vocals on "Don't Speak" were wicked, I was just so wow'ed with the first half in particular, and the guitar was such a nice touch. This girl is soooooo good. I disagreed with the judge's critique of her outfit, I liked it and didn't think it half as bad as they made it out to be.
Lil, again, kind of disappointed. First of all, she looked so matronly and about 53 in that wig and dress instead of the incredibly young 23 that she is....who is styling her? Vocals on "I Surrender" were pretty good, it's Celine, for cryin' out loud, most idols shouldn't even go there....BUT....it was pretty boring for me, and I fear she is surrendering her lead on idol. I had to agree with Simon that her personality is being sucked out of her and with Paula that she has been too adult contemporary. Hope she can regroup STAT! Kids are cute though, and it tugged at my mommy strings to see her tears. I know she misses them and was glad Randy gave the one a big ole' bear hug!
Adam was so impressive last week, and so didn't expect him to break it out da box two weeks in a row. He held steady with an interesting take on Wild Cherry's "Play that Funky Music White Boy" but I wasn't digging it. True to Adam , he screamed and screeched far too much of it for my taste, but I did like the light show and appreciated his props to Rickey and the band, which was classy.
    (Mandisa in the house!)
Poor song choices coupled with poor performances did Anoop, Megan and Matt in tonight. Anoop is just showing his colors in this competition, I'm afraid his 1st performance spot also did him no favors. Usher's "All Caught Up" just wasn't a great choice for him, and I'm thinking he really isn't meant to be an R & B artist....maybe economics is a better choice! Megan, what else to say? Her vocals were better this week than last, but "Turn Your Lights Down Low" should be read as, Lights out, Megan! And poor Matt....talented guy who is just struggling to connect with voters and more importantly with himself. His song choice made sense on paper but was a disaster in person. The Fray's "You Found Me" (which I've actually heard before! Yay me!) was just all over the place....poor guy.....danger, Will Robinson. I think he's waaay better than Megan but she has fans....
What did you think? Do you think it will be Megan or Scott to go home this this week, or will Matt come up short in the votes? And more importantly, is there a place for Kris in the Top 4 in place of either Danny, Adam, Lil or Allison?

    Top Download Week Thoughts

Okay, I'll be honest....I don't know what the Idols should sing this week for the somewhat wide open "top downloads" theme....I have to admit, I love music, but I'm not so much into downloading. Yes, that means I still have the peach crate full of albums that my husband threatens to get rid of every other year or so that has followed us through 9 moves in 17 years. I have an iPod and know how iTunes works. But I also bought both Davids on CD. Admittedly, I am slow to new mediums. I see the value in my space-challenged apartment to digital music, but still must read liner notes, production credits, who played which instrument on what track, and who penned each tune and where it was recorded.....and of course appreciate the Almighty Album Cover, so haven't done much downloading since 2005 or whenever this thing really took off.

That said, Scott is in danger, no matter the theme. Idol Chatter ranks him 8th of the 9 remaining contestants (Megan comes in at 9th) and Entertainment Weekly's Power List from last week had him at number 10 of 10, unchanged from the week before. I mean no disrespect, I just think he's the weakest link. It could be an all-piano soft ballad Barry Manilow week and this guy would tank.

Of course, Megan is also near the bottom no matter what she sings. The girl just isn't good enough.

Needing to bring it full throttle to stay in the game are Kris lack-of-producer-support Allen, Anoop BBQ-loving-geek Desai, and Matt distracting-mole Giraud. (There, I said it.) Not to say that they aren't talented! And they have come far in this competition and each brings something to the Idol table....but they are faltering.

Top 4 for sure are Lil, Danny, Adam and Allison, although each of them, too, has challenges this week. Top-seeded Adam broke away from his freaked out thing last week long enough to bring Middle America something we could embrace....a tender performance of a Motown classic, complete with classy look. The challenge for him this week is to bring something else that housewives and retired postal workers in Des Moines can enjoy without alienating those who enjoy black nail polish, guyliner, screaming (AKA falsettos), and "current" stuff.

Danny (dubbed on the Web as Hokey Gokey, LOL) has stumbled the last couple of weeks, and I was shocked to see that the above-mentioned USA today ranking has him at #7 of the 9! Reasons vary, but make sense (check the article). Watch out Danny!

Lil has also stumbled the last week and also has a pivotal week ahead. Folks are suggesting she do Rhianna to show that she can be a contemporary recording artist, and I agree with that. We know she can sing, but to paraphrase the judges, it's time to see what kind of record she would make.

Allison falls into the same category. Bottom 3 to top 3 from one week to the next, the public is fickle, for sure. We know she is mad talented, but again, who is she as an artist? On the American Idol website, she lists Pink, Beck, Katy Perry, Mariah Carey, and Heart as her "musical influences".... a diverse bunch that doesn't spell one particular genre. Could spell danger for her on Idol. Pull it together, Allison!

No matter what, I will be watching and sending you my opinions after the show! And I hope you share yours here....

    Motown Week Result Ramblings

I wasn't at all surprised by tonight's results, were you? Micheal is a nice guy and has a decent voice, just not one that can stand up to this season's competition. Best to you and your beautiful family!

I don't have much to say, just a few random thoughts.....

    1. America got it right this week. And not just because I predicted Micheal in the bottom 3, but because it makes sense. How Matt Giraud got there, I don't know...he had heaps of judge's praise, but maybe I'm not the only viewer who just hasn't connected to him yet this season. There is just something off about him....for me, anyway. I could clearly sense the shock in his face as he sat on the Silver Stool of Doom. But refreshing to be reminded that, YES -- the voting public does the right thing, occasionally! Meanwhile, Megan is the luckiest girl on Earth...

    2. Stevie Wonder is a National Treasure. I know his songs have been done to death on Idol, and I can see that he has gained a bunch of weight and the years have added puff to his stuff....but gee whiz, the man is dope talented and still brings it each and every time, one million percent yes. I just loved the judges enjoying the performance, for real, and watching the contestants listen to Stevie. We're used to seeing Paula cut loose :) but Kara really let go, I think for the first time.
Frankly, I was amazed to see which of the contestants knew the words and who didn't....golden props to Anoop, who has new points in my book for both singing along, and for being caught on camera at one point clearly saying, "Oh, my gosh..." to being 20 feet from a living legend....keep keeping it real, Anoop. Contrast to Adam, who clapped along awkwardly, and looked as though he'd never even heard of Stevie Wonder, let alone heard any of his songs. HHHmmmph. And the the girls, Megan and Allison, pretty much throwing paper airplanes in the back of science class and goofing off as if there was nothing to be learned or enjoyed. Ladies, pay attention! Stevie is in the house!

    3. The Judge's Save is a Ball of Crap. It's pretty clear, even with 9 contestants remaining, that the so-called "Judge's Save" should really be called the "Keep Adam, Danny or Lil in the Finals as Necessary Move" because those are the only folks who are going to get it, and only in weeks 7 or 6....in other words, at the virtual last minute, and not now, and not for Alexis or Micheal or Megan, or Kris, or Anoop, or for Matt and maybe not even for Allison, if it looks like the public doesn't embrace her. And the antics at the judge's table during Micheal's final performance were despicable. Maybe even Oscar-worthy. I was embarrassed for them, and for the franchise, and a bit sick to my stomach, watching them "debate" and claim they had not yet reached a verdict, declaring that his performance was really good....plu-ease. That is a total mockery of All Things Idol.
Rumor is that next week's theme is iTunes.... not sure what to make of that. Will keep you posted!
